The Colosseum underground dungeons tour and the gladiator floor tour sold under this single listing are two different visits, and the operator's inclusion list says so in four words: "Must select Underground option". A full week of free cancellation makes it the most forgiving underground booking here, which matters when the scarce part is a date rather than a price. Colosseum underground dungeons tours by how easily they book ranks the rest on the same measure.

Quick answer Two routes, one title — and the four words that decide it

Pick the Underground option and you walk the hypogeum, the arena floor, the Colosseum and then the Roman Forum and Palatine. Pick the Gladiator Floor option and the tunnels drop out. The operator states the condition plainly, which is more than most listings manage. Free cancellation runs to seven days before the start — the longest window of any underground listing compared here.

Key takeaways

  • "Must select Underground option" is the operator's own wording — a Colosseum underground tour title decides nothing
  • Seven days of free cancellation, against three on most comparable listings
  • One and a half to three hours depending on the option, including the Forum and Palatine
  • Small group, English-language guiding, all entrance tickets included
  • 4.63 from 14 reviews — a thin base, so read the recent ones
  • The same operator sells the 3-in-1 tour, where the underground replaces the arena floor rather than adding to it

The Two Routes

Both are guided, both include every entrance ticket, and both end in the Roman Forum. The difference is one level of the building.

The dungeons route

The hypogeum is the part of the Colosseum ordinary admission never reaches: two levels of brick corridors under the arena where the cages, the props and the lift machinery sat. This route adds the arena floor as well, so it is the complete version of the monument.

The operator's phrasing — must select Underground option — exists because plenty of people book the other one by accident.

The gladiator floor route

The arena deck at gladiator level, entered where the fighters entered, with the hypogeum visible below the edge of the decking. It is the cheaper and more available of the two, and it is the one most likely to be open on short notice.

If your dates are inside two weeks, this is often the only version still selling.

What comes after either

The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, on the same ticket. On the longer option the guide walks you through them; on the shorter one you go on alone. Neither is an extra you are paying for — every Park ticket covers that area — so weigh the price difference against guiding, not access.

Why a Week of Cancellation Matters Here

The date is the scarce thing

On the window we counted on the Park's own calendar, one underground place in 10,150 was free. Operator quota is the way around that, and it moves fast. Booking early is the only strategy that works, and booking early is easier when you can change your mind up to seven days out at no cost.

Most underground listings here allow three days; two state nothing at all.

What cancellation does not cover

If the Park closes the hypogeum on the day — it happens, and reviewers of other listings mention it — the tour usually runs above ground instead. That is not a cancellation by you, and the refund treatment is the operator's own policy rather than a platform rule. Ask what happens in that case before you book, especially if the tunnels are the entire reason for the booking.

Ticket names, prices and conditions in this section were read from the Parco archeologico del Colosseo's own shop, ticketing.colosseo.it, on 5 September 2026.

Questions About This Tour

Which option includes the dungeons?

Only the Underground option — the operator writes "Must select Underground option" in its inclusion list. The gladiator floor route stays on the arena deck.

How long is the tour?

Between one and a half and three hours, depending on the option and whether the guide walks the Roman Forum and Palatine with you.

What happens if the underground is closed on the day?

The Park can close the hypogeum at short notice and the tour then runs above ground. Confirm the operator's refund treatment for that case before booking — it is a policy question, not a platform one.

Only fourteen reviews — is that a problem?

It means the 4.63 average is a weak signal, not that the tour is weak. Read the most recent reviews, and note that the same operator runs the far more reviewed 3-in-1 listing.
